5 Hizbul terrorists gunned down in J&K’s Kulgam

area, 11 people — including a CRPF sub-inspector, six security personnel and four civilians — were injured when terrorists lobbed a grenade at a police party on Sunday evening.

Based on intelligence inputs, a joint team of personnel from the Indian Army, Special Operations Group and CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation in Kellam region, when holed-up terrorists opened fire at them. In the ensuing gunbattle, three terrorists were killed while two others took refuge in nearby houses. The duo attacked security forces while they were clearing the debris to retrieve the bodies of the dead terrorists, and were also killed in the encounter,

Mehta said all five terrorists belonged to proscribed outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, and have been identified as Waseem Bashir Rather alias Zeeshan, Zahid Parrey, Aqib Nazir

— all from Kulgam; Idrees Bhat from Anantnag, and Qaimoh resident Parvez Bhat.

Security forces also recovered arms and ammunition and other incriminating evidence from the encounter site. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
