INDORE: Five men - a contractor and four labourers - were killed in their sleep when a roof they had laid less than two days earlier caved in on them at an under-construction resort near Indore early Friday morning. Two of those killed were brothers.

The victims were building a cottage for the resort in Choral village of Mhow tehsil, around 32km from the district headquarters on the Indore-Ichhapur highway.

It was raining hard on Thursday night, which led the victims to take shelter in the half-built cottage. Heavy showers could have weakened the newly laid concrete slab and it collapsed early on Friday. The accident was discovered in the morning.

SP-rural Hitika Vasal told TOI the guard saw the collapsed structure and alerted cops. "The exact time of the accident is yet to be ascertained," she said.Heavy machines were deployed to reach the victims. Five bodies were pulled out from the rubble, Vasal said.

Four of the labourers had clicked a selfie with the roof after casting it on Wednesday afternoon. One of them joined work a day later. Police were registering a case against four people for causing death by negligence. tnn
