KOLKATA: Bengal BJP has set to rest the controversy over the nationality of actor

, who joined the saffron party on Wednesday in the presence of state unit president Dilip Ghosh.

A day later, BJP state vice-president Jayprakash Majumdar produced Ghosh’s birth certificate issued by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to substantiate the claim that Ghosh was an Indian national who worked in films produced both in

Bangladesh

and India. TMC raked up the issue after the actor parried questions on her nationality while joining BJP.

Majumdar displayed the birth certificate hours after Kolkata mayor and TMC minister Firhad Hakim took a dig at BJP’s induction of the actor. “These people (BJP) are handing over the party flag to anyone and everyone. They should have first ascertained if the person they are taking in is at all an Indian national,” Hakim said.

Majumdar retaliated saying, “The mayor doesn’t know that his own KMC had issued the birth certificate.” He also produced the actor’s Indian passport, Aadhaar number and voter ID that showed Ghosh’s Salt Lake address as her permanent residence, to substantiate his claim.

A few weeks ago, BJP had raised a storm when TMC had invited Bangladeshi actors Ferdous Ahmed and Gazi Abdun Noor for campaigning during Lok Sabha elections.

Ahmed was caught on camera campaigning for TMC candidate Kanhaiyalal Agarwal and participating in a road show.

BJP went to the Election Commission, raising questions on foreign nationals influencing Indian voters. The home ministry later cancelled Ahmed’s business visa and issued him a notice to leave India without delay.

The ministry also blacklisted the actor after Bureau of Immigration submitted a report that Ahmed had committed visa violations
