There was no detail shared by either the law ministry or Shah’s office on the nature of the meeting, but sources said that the two ministers met Kovind to discuss workings of the committee and scheduling a formal meeting of members.

Last week, after the government notified the constitution of the high-level committee headed by Kovind on exploring the possibility of simultaneous elections to Parliament and assemblies, secretaries of the legal and legislative departments of the Union law ministry met him as part of a preparatory briefing.

On Saturday, the law ministry had notified the constitution of the eight-member committee that included home minister Amit Shah, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former J&K CM Ghulam Nabi Azad and former finance commission chairman N K Singh. Chowdhury later withdrew from the committee.

The committee has been given the task of examining the possibility of simultaneous polls to all there-tiers of the democracy, including the panchayats and municipalities. Though there is no time-frame specified in the notification, the order says the panel can submit its recommendation at the earliest.

Besides former Lok Sabha secretary general Subhash C Kashyap, senior advocate Harish Salve and former chief vigilance commissioner Sanjay Kothari are the other members of the committee.
