Chanchal assembly results 2026: TMC's Prasun Banerjee wins 1,28,014 votes, defeats BJP's Ratan Das by 63,874 votes

In West Bengals' Chanchal assembly, All India Trinamool Congress's Prasun Banerjee won with 1,28,014 votes. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's Ratan Das who lost by 63,874 votes.

Chanchal in 2026 will see TMC field Prasun Banerjee against BJP's Ratan Das and Congress's Asif Mehbub.

Chanchal is a general (unreserved) assembly constituency in Malda district, under the Maldaha Uttar Lok Sabha seat. It covers Chanchal I community development block and several gram panchayats of Harishchandrapur I block. The area is almost entirely rural and has a notable Muslim population, which has historically influenced electoral outcomes. The constituency was known as a Congress bastion for some years, with Asif Mehbub — now the Congress candidate — having won the seat in both 2011 and 2016.

In 2016, Asif Mehbub retained the seat comfortably for Congress, defeating TMC by a significant margin. However, 2021 proved transformative: TMC's Nihar Ranjan Ghosh won in a landslide, defeating the BJP's Dipankar Ram by over 67,000 votes and reducing Congress to third place. That dominant performance underscores TMC's consolidation of the Muslim vote in this constituency. With Prasun Banerjee now carrying TMC's banner in 2026, the party will seek to hold this seat, while Asif Mehbub makes a comeback attempt for Congress.
