I can understand the extreme anguish of Nirbhaya’s mother.Harshest punishment should be given to the perpetuators of the most heinous crime. Please correct me if I am wrong. I feel life imprisonment is harsher than death because in case of hanging, the convict will suffer for about 15 minutes or so. But, life imprisonment will torture the convict physically and mentally to no end. Also, in the course of serving life imprisonment, the convict might reveal some more names who might have also been part of the crime. This information would die with the convict if he / she is hanged to death. In case of really genuine cases of wrong persons being convicted, life imprisonment, instead of death, will hold out some chance of reversing the judgment if the convict is proved innocent or had a lesser involvement than what was taken into consideration for pronouncing the judgment. Finally, apart from serving as a deterrent to others, life imprisonment would provide social scientists, psychologists, etc. for understanding the behavioral patterns of criminal minds and suggest preventive methods.Read allPost comment
