​Cyclone Remal landfall process begins over coastal areas of West Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the landfall process of cyclone Remal began over West Bengal and Bangladesh. "Cyclone Remal over the North Bay of Bengal is to move northwards about 130 km southeast of Sagar Islands (WB), 140 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 140 km southeast of Canning (WB), 160 km southwest of Mongla of Bangladesh and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by midnight today with a max wind speed of 110-120 kmph," according to IMD. Cyclone makes landfall on Bangladesh coast

The powerful cyclone made landfall on the Bangladesh coast, according to government meteorologists. "The severe Cyclone Remal has started crossing the Bangladesh coast," Bangladesh meteorological department director, Azizur Rahman told AFP. "We have so far recorded maximum wind speeds of 90 kilometres (56 miles) per hour, but the wind speed may pick up more pace," he added. (AP photo)

Remal to impact several districts of Odisha

The meteorological department has cautioned four districts in Odisha about the possibility of heavy rainfall due to the approaching cyclone Remal. The districts of Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapara, and Mayurbhanj are expected to receive rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm. (AP photo)

NDRF deploys 14 teams in West Bengal

"A total of 14 NDRF teams are deployed in West Bengal to assist in rescue and relief operations considering landfall of cyclonic storm Remal," NDRF said. Over 100,000 people relocated to safe shelters in Bengal

Eastern, South Eastern railways cancel trains

The Eastern and South Eastern railways have cancelled numerous trains. From May 26 morning, South Bengal districts experienced sporadic rainfall and strong winds, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of buses, taxis, and three-wheelers operating on the streets of Kolkata and district towns.
