Fatehgarh Sahib election results 2024: Congress's Amar Singh wins Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha seat in Punjab

NEW DELHI: Amar Singh, the incumbent Member of Parliament and Congress candidate, emerged victorious in the Fatehgarh Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab. The Election Commission declared that Singh secured 3,32,591 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Gurpreet Singh GP from the AAP, by a margin of 34,202 votes.

According to the EC data, Gurpreet Singh managed to garner 2,98,389 votes, falling short of Amar Singh's tally. The Fatehgarh Sahib seat witnessed a closely contested battle between the two candidates, with Amar Singh ultimately retaining his position as the representative of the constituency in the Lok Sabha.

Fatehgarh Sahib (SC) Lok Sabha Constituency participated in the seventh phase of polling on June 1.

The Fatehgarh Sahib (SC) Lok Sabha constituency is one of Punjab's 13 parliamentary seats and is designated for Scheduled Castes. It encompasses the entire Fatehgarh Sahib district, portions of Ludhiana and Sangrur districts, and has a literacy rate of 71.05%.

The constituency, also a city and an esteemed Sikh pilgrimage site, is named after Fateh Singh, the young son of Guru Gobind Singh, who, along with his brother Zorawar Singh, was captured and buried alive during the Mughal-Sikh conflict. Created after the delimitation in 2008, its inaugural Lok Sabha election in 2009 saw the Congress defeating the Akali Dal, and the seat has also been won by the Aam Aadmi Party. The constituency has 1,396,957 registered voters.

In the 2019 General Assembly Elections for Fatehgarh Sahib, Dr. Amar Singh of the Indian National Congress (INC) won with 411,651 votes. He was followed by Darbara Singh Guru of the Shiromani Akali Dal, who garnered 317,753 votes, and Manwinder Singh Giaspura of the Lok Insaaf Party (LIP), who received 142,274 votes. Dr. Amar Singh's victory margin was 93,898 votes. The diverse electorate and the 65.67% voter turnout underscore the constituency's significance in Punjab's political landscape.

The 2014 general elections saw Harinder Singh Khalsa of the Aam Aadmi Party emerging victorious in the Fatehgarh Sahib constituency, defeating Congress’s Sadhu Singh by a margin of 54,144 votes. Khalsa secured 367,293 votes, representing 35.63% of the total votes, while Sadhu Singh received nearly 30%, amounting to 313,149 votes. Kulwant Singh of the Shiromani Akali Dal came in third with 312,815 votes.

Overall, the Fatehgarh Sahib constituency has a rich history and significant political importance, with a mix of historical reverence and modern electoral dynamics.
