NEW DELHI: Former Union minister and Congress leader P Chidamabaram said on Friday that the government's decision to withdraw all three new farm laws is impelled by fear of elections.

"What cannot be achieved by democratic protests can be achieved by the fear of impending elections!," the former finance minister said in a tweet.

"Anyway, it is a great victory for the farmers and for the Congress party which was unwavering in its opposition to the farm laws," Chidambaram added.



Earlier, addressing the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, Prime Minister said the three farm laws were for the benefit of farmers but "we couldn't convince a section of farmers despite best efforts".

The legislation to withdraw the farm laws will be introduced in the upcoming

Parliament

session starting on November 29.
