Heatwave havoc: Delhi struggles to cope as temperatures continue to soar

Emergency review meetings were held during the day at national and state level addressing the heatwave crisis.

Union health minister JP Nadda reviewed the preparedness of central government hospitals to deal with the situation.

Meanwhile, Delhi health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also chaired an emergency meeting with heads of all major hospitals regarding heatstroke patients. The Delhi health department also issued a circular to all MS, MDs and CDMOs to ensure that emergency services remain operational 24x7 and a senior doctor must always remain present in the Emergency to handle heatstroke patients. The scorching heatwave drove Delhi's power demand to unprecedented levels. State Load Dispatch Centre data reveals that on Tuesday at 3.22 PM, the city's peak power demand reached 8,647 MW, marking the highest ever recorded in the national capital's history.

Prior to this, on May 22, the city's peak power demand crossed this mark for the first time. Since then, it has exceeded 8000 MW on eight separate occasions.

Passengers aboard SpiceJet flight SG 486 from Delhi to Darbhanga were reportedly left without air conditioning for over an hour during a sweltering heatwave at the Delhi Airport.

However, SpiceJet issued a statement addressing the concerns and said that the air conditioning was working normally throughout the flight, which was verified and cross-checked upon arrival in Darbhanga. (Photo: PTI)
