Journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested more than two years ago, has finally got bail and has been allowed to leave jail. What was his experience in jail? And does he plan to keep writing?

In September 2020, a young Dalit woman had gone to the fields in her hometown of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh. She disappeared and was found much later, beaten, tortured and gang-raped. She was admitted to a hospital in Aligarh and later shifted to New Delhi where she died. Her family later told the media that the police forced them to cremate the body after midnight, and that only her father was allowed to go to the crematorium.

The case became a political hot potato, with the National Human Rights Commission, the Delhi Commission for Women and almost every opposition party targeting the UP government for laxity. It was also a media magnet, with every television channel, print and digital media sending reporters to cover what was happening in Hathras.
