In September 2020, a young Dalit woman had gone to the fields in her hometown of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh. She disappeared and was found much later, beaten, tortured and gang-raped. She was admitted to a hospital in Aligarh and later shifted to New Delhi where she died. Her family later told the media that the police forced them to cremate the body after midnight, and that only her father was allowed to go to the crematorium.
The case became a political hot potato, with the National Human Rights Commission, the Delhi Commission for Women and almost every opposition party targeting the UP government for laxity.
