Cyclone 'Dana' makes landfall

Coastal Odisha was battered by heavy winds and rain as Cyclone Dana, classified as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds reaching up to 110 kmph, made landfall on Thursday night and moved northwest on Friday morning. Heavy downpours and gusty winds were also recorded in parts of South Bengal.

Trees, electric poles uprooted, shops blown away

Though the cyclone so far has left no causalities, it caused uprooting of many trees and electric poles. Shops by the coast were also blown away, causing disruption to normal public life.

Gusty winds and heavy downpour

Six hours before the cyclone made landfall, its outer bands had enveloped Odisha’s coastal areas, bringing widespread rain and strong winds starting from Thursday evening.

Lakhs evacuated from low-lying areas

Over 4 lakh people have been evacuated in Odisha, while roughly the same number of people have taken refuge in West Bengal. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the state had identified over 3.5 lakh people for evacuation from low-lying areas.

Expected to gradually weaken

According to IMD, the landfall is expected to continue, before gradually it weakens into a cyclonic storm.

Flight operations resume

After the cyclone made its landfall and IMD said the storm is expected to gradually weaken, air operations resumed after services were put on hold from Thursday.

Restoration and relief work begin

The restoration and relief work has begun. NDRF team removed uprooted trees in different villages of Dhamara. The people of Dhamra, Bhadrak and adjoining areas in coastal Odisha witnessed turbulent seas, gusty winds and rainfall as an impact of the cyclone.

Trains continue to remain suspended

Over 400 trains passing through the two neighbouring states were cancelled in response to the cyclone and remains so until Friday morning.
