J&K assembly polls: National Conference releases manifesto; promises this for Kashmiri pandits

NEW DELHI: In the run up to the first assembly elections to Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, National Conference released its poll manifesto on Monday promising "dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits" to the Union territory.

The manifesto further assured repealing the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the release of political prisoners.

Calling it an "agenda for governance," JKNC vice president Omar Abdullah said, "This is not just a document for the election. When everyone will read it, they will understand that it is entirely an agenda for governance. This is a five-year roadmap, and implementing it will bring change to Jammu and Kashmir. Many talked about change before, but all we got was deception."

Here's what the manifesto guarantees:

  • Repeal PSA
  • Release Political prisoners
  • Committed to dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits
  • Eased Passport Verification
  • End to unjust terminations
  • Unnecessary harassment to people on Highways will be stopped


On the economic front, the party promises 6 cylinders free of cost to the economically weaker sections of the society. It also aims to 1 lakh jobs to youth and free travel to women in all public transports.

  • Provide 1 lac jobs to youth
  • J&K Youth Employment Generation Act to be passed within three months
  • Provide 6 cylinders free of cost to EWS
  • Women entitled to free travel in all public transport
  • Enhance marriage assistance
  • Increase the medical allowance of pensioners to Rs 1000 from Rs 300
  • Minority commission to be established
  • PDS to be strengthened

The Union territory is scheduled to hold its elections in three phases starting September 18, with the final vote count taking place on October 4. The second phase of the assembly elections will occur on September 25, followed by the third phase on October 1.
