Kalyan election results 2024 live updates: Dr Shrikant Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena wins

NEW DELHI: Dr Shrikant Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena won the Kalyan parliamentary constituency after defeating Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Vaishali Darekar - Rane.

Kalyan is one of the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, covering part of the Thane district and comprising six assembly segments.

The Kalyan constituency went to the polls in the fifth phase of the 2024 general elections on May 20. According to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the voter turnout saw a significant increase, reaching 50.12%.

For the 2024 elections, Shrikant Shinde, a two-time MP and son of Maharashtra’s chief minister Eknath Shinde, is the prominent candidate for Shiv Sena.

Vaishali Darekar of Shiv Sena-UBT is a formidable challenger. With a track record of three victories in the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal elections and known for her assertive opposition to Shrikant Shinde.

Established after the 2008 delimitation, this constituency emerged from the erstwhile Thane constituency. It comprises six Vidhan Sabha segments and has been a stronghold for the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, reflecting the dynamic political landscape of the state. The demographic composition includes 8.5% Scheduled Castes (SC) and 2.3% Scheduled Tribes (ST).

Ram Kapse of the BJP played a crucial role in establishing the alliance’s presence with consecutive wins from 1989 to 1996. The constituency later witnessed a shift in allegiance to Shiv Sena with Prakash Paranjape, followed by his son Anand Paranjape. Anand’s subsequent move to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) marked a significant change in the political dynamics of the region.

In the 2019 elections, Shrikant Shinde faced NCP’s Babaji Balaram Patil and BSP’s Ravindra Kene, among others, and emerged victorious with a significant margin. This reaffirmed the constituency's loyalty to Shiv Sena, highlighting an engaged and discerning electorate. Shinde’s 2014 victory further cemented Shiv Sena’s dominance in Kalyan, showcasing the party’s resilience against diverse political challenges.
