On the other hand, Ujjwal Nikam, a renowned special public prosecutor known for his role in high-profile cases like the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the 1993 serial blasts, is the BJP candidate. Despite his lack of campaign experience, he benefits from the party’s strong organizational backing and a clean political slate.

Historically, the seat has seen a rotation of power among different parties. For instance, Manohar Joshi from Shiv Sena won in 1999, and Ramdas Athawale from RPI in 1998. Narayan Athawale from Shiv Sena claimed victory in 1996, while Sharad Dighe from Congress triumphed in 1991 and 1984. Vidyadhar Gokhale from Shiv Sena narrowly won in 1989, and Pramila Madhu Dandavate from Janata Party defeated the Congress candidate in 1980. Ahilya Rangnekar from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) emerged victorious in 1977.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Poonam Mahajan won with 486,672 votes, defeating Priya Dutt of the National Congress Party, who received 356,667 votes. Similarly, in the 2014 elections, Poonam Mahajan triumphed with 478,535 votes against Congress’s Priya Sunil Dutt, who garnered 291,764 votes. The upcoming election promises another intense battle in this ever-volatile constituency.
