NEW DELHI: Dreaded Naxalite Nangsu Tumreti, also known as Giridhar, surrendered along with his wife, Sangeeta Usendi, alias Lalita, in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Saturday in the presence of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Giridhar, who has more than 170 cases against him and a bounty of Rs 25 lakh on his head, and Lalita, who has 17 cases and a Rs 16 lakh bounty, decided to give up their arms.

Giridhar joined the Etapalli Dalam of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) in 1996 and was the head of its activities in Gadchiroli. He has 179 cases against him, including 86 related to encounters and 15 of arson. His wife, Lalita, also faces 17 cases. Under the surrender and rehabilitation scheme, Giridhar will receive Rs 15 lakh while Lalita will get Rs 8.50 lakh from the Central and state governments.

Speaking to reporters,Fadnavis said: "The backbone of the Maoist movement in Gadchiroli has broken with the surrender of Giridhar."

He further lauded the efforts of the Gadchiroli police, saying, "I appreciate the relentless efforts of the Gadchiroli police to end the Naxal menace and bring ultras back into the mainstream."

The Gadchiroli police official highlighted these points, emphasizing the significant impact of this surrender on the Maoist activities in the region. The authorities believe this move will aid in restoring peace and order in the area.
