The chief minister also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh to the family of slain police officer, while assuring that the family would be able to draw full salary till the time of his retirement.

“We will go into every details of the encounter. That is why we are going for a high-level investigation by senior officers,” Sonowal said.

Sources said that the investigation is likely to be headed by additional chief secretary, Sanjay Krishna.

Former chief minister and AGP MLA, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta also raised the demand for investigation into the quality of bullet proof jackets provided to police.

Kalita, who was leading a team of CRPF Cobra battalion in a raid in a house at Bordumsa where Ulfa militants were holed up, was killed after taking nine bullets. Three Ulfa militants were also killed in the encounter, which took place close to Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Condemning the killing, Sonowal said that such incident disturbs peace and hampers developmental in the state.

The chief minister said extremist elements would be dealt with firm hands. The state government would not tolerate any incidents affecting the peace and harmony in the society, he added said.

The chief minister has already directed director general of police Kuladhar Saikia to take steps for arresting militants of the proscribed the outfit culprits at the earliest. He also said that police has been asked to intensify operations against militant groups in the state.

“Bhaskar Kalita has shown a bright example of dedication towards one’s duty. His courage and sacrifice would inspire all security personnel to fight against terrorism with renewed vigour and force”, Sonowal said in his condolence message.
