Meet 6 heroes who stepped up when Chennai went down

A constable, a wireman, a bus driver, a TNDRF employee, a helpline operator and a marketing professional were among the thousands who worked round the clock to rescue others as Chennai was hit by heavy rainfall and floods

This constable’s alertness saved three lives

Traffic police constable J Prabhakaran, 47, of Vellore, attached to the Alandur police station in Chennai was glued to his walkie-talkie, receiving instructions for the day at 7.45am on December 4 (Monday), when he heard a loud thud.

He first thought it was the rumbling of thunder, but then he saw a structure attached to a fuel station crashing down and a bus stop nearby collapsing on a container inside a 60ft trench dug up for a building.
