Transport, truckers’ associations to celebrate January 24 as ‘Drivers’ Day’
NEW DELHI: In an initiative to recognise the contribution of drivers, major transport and truckers’ associations, including the Association of Road State Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), on Friday announced to celebrate Jan 24 as ‘Drivers’ Day’ from this year.
They have urged people to greet drivers on that day to honour their service and contribution to the economy. The ASRTU has also urged the govt to observe ‘Drivers’ Day’ to promote safety, welfare and recognition of drivers. “We will have a grand function this year and we are urging people to show their respect to drivers for their personal vehicles and commercial fleets. They can greet drivers by saying thanks, giving flowers or extending good wishes,” said Anil Chhikara, advisor to the Assam govt and an expert in the transport sector.
The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has been doing this for a few years with the participation of people from all walks of life. “We are trying to create an awareness among all road users to celebrate one day to show our respect to all drivers and thank them. The concept is to recognise a day for them, to show that society cares for them and that society is indebted to them for their positive contribution,” said one of the persons who attended the meeting held at ASRTU headquarters.
