Watch: Bihar woman’s Chhath song mentions ‘Modi Bhaiya’; 4-day festival begins tomorrow
Chhath Puja, a four-day festival dedicated to honoring Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya through Vedic rituals, is set to begin on Saturday.
As preparations gain momentum across Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged citizens to share festival songs on social media. A video gaining attention online features a woman incorporating PM Modi's name into a traditional song.
Central to the festival are the unique folk songs known as 'Chhath Geet.' These songs often include blessings for family members and loved ones. Renowned artists like Sharda Sinha continue to uphold the cultural tradition with timeless classics that are revisited each year, highlighting the festival’s enduring legacy across generations.

Ahead of the festival, Prime Minister Modi took to X to invite citizens to share Chhath songs, emphasizing that the melodies dedicated to Chhathi Maiya enhance the festival's grandeur and divinity. He also promised to share some of these songs in the coming days.
"The grand festival of Chhath, dedicated to nature and culture, is approaching. Devotees across Bihar and the entire country are immersed in preparations with full devotion. The songs of Chhathi Maiya enhance the grandeur and divinity of this sacred occasion. I request you to share Chhath Puja songs with me. I will share them with all fellow countrymen over the next few days," the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
Remembering the legacy of the legendary folk singer Sharda Sinha, the prime minister in his Begusarai address. He spoke about how the Padma Bhushan singer and how she would always be remembered through her songs. "When it comes to worshipping Chhathi Maiya, it's natural to remember Sharda Sinha. She was the daughter-in-law of Begusarai. We honored her first with the Padma Bhushan and then this year with the Padma Vibhushan. She is no longer with us, but her songs will always be remembered," said the PM Modi.
While Chhath Puja has its roots in Bihar, its observance extends to Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and diaspora communities. Public preparations and riverbank arrangements are underway in various cities and towns. The festival's cross-border participation in parts of Nepal further underscores Chhath’s shared cultural heritage in the eastern subcontinent.
