This is how coffee affects your skin

It's beneficial, and it gives some side effects as well. Coffee is an integral part of our daily routine. It can affect your skin in both positive and negative ways. It depends on the amount of consumption in a day and formulation!

If it is 1-2 cups of coffee, it gives benefits to the skin. A daily cup of coffee gives a source of antioxidants like polyphenols, which prevent ageing and environmental damage like UV exposure. It reduces puffiness and can even exfoliate. Dr. Shilpa Patil, MD, Dermatologist, Director of Ethoski Cosmetology Clinic, explains how your daily dose of coffee impacts your skin.

Benefits

1. Rich in antioxidants – It contains polyphenol antioxidants, and it protects from environmental damage.

2. Anti-inflammatory properties – The anti-inflammatory properties of coffee reduce pigmentation and redness.

3. Improved circulation – Caffeine improves the blood flow. More blood circulation provides more oxygen to the body and skin, and ultimately, it gives a healthy complexion.

4. Exfoliating power – Coffee grounds are a natural exfoliant. It helps to remove dead skin and gives fresh, soft, smooth skin.

5. Protecting against UV exposure – It helps prevent dark spots, sunburn, and sunspots as well. Research shows that it prevents skin cancer as well

A larger amount of coffee can create some irritation and increase oil production, with acne formation. For clear skin, invest in organic beans. Do not add dairy and sugar, as it can increase the risk of acne.

Overconsumption of caffeine can cause:

1. Dehydration, and the area around the eyes can appear sunken.

2. Aggravating acne – An excessive amount can trigger cortisol levels. High cortisol increases oil production, which leads to more acne.

3. Sensitivity to sunlight – Excessive coffee consumption might increase skin sensitivity to sunlight and pigmentation issues.

4. Potential allergic reactions such as redness, itching, and irritation.

5. Staining and dullness – An excessive amount may dull your complexion.

2. Use sunscreen – SPF 50+ according to your skin type is a must.

3. Coffee-based skin products – face masks and creams.

4. Choose healthy additives. Must include black coffee, 1-2 cups a day, not on an empty stomach.
