Morning vs night: Which is the best time to oil hair for hair growth?

Why hair oiling matters for hair growth and what's the best time to oil hair

Hair oiling is one of those things most of us grew up with, whether we liked it or not. Grandma’s champi on a Sunday afternoon, mum warming oil on the gas before wash day, that strong whiff of coconut or mustard in the air. It’s all very familiar.

But beyond nostalgia, oiling actually serves a purpose. No, oil won’t magically give you waist-length hair overnight. What it does is create the right environment for growth. A good oil massage boosts blood circulation in the scalp, helping nutrients reach the hair roots better. It also reduces dryness, strengthens the roots, controls breakage, and soothes an irritated scalp.

In Indian conditions - pollution, hard water, heat styling, stress, irregular meals - oiling isn’t optional care. It’s basic maintenance for healthy hair.

2/11

Morning hair oiling: Quick care for busy days

Morning oiling usually means applying oil for a short window, anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, before washing your hair. This works well if you sweat a lot at night, have an oily or acne-prone scalp, or simply can’t sleep with oil in your hair without feeling uncomfortable.

A light massage in the morning wakes up the scalp and gets circulation going. You don’t need heavy oils here. Coconut, almond, or a light ayurvedic oil is more than enough. And you really don’t need to soak your scalp, less is more.

The downside? Oils need time to penetrate. When you oil in the morning, you often wash it off before it’s had the chance to do its job properly. Plus, stepping out with oiled hair means dust and pollution sticking to your scalp, especially in Indian cities. Morning oiling is good for shine and basic care, but it has its limits when it comes to hair growth.

3/11

Night hair oiling: Why it’s the old-school favourite

There’s a reason night oiling has been passed down through generations. When you oil your hair at night, the oil stays on for hours, sometimes six to eight, giving it enough time to nourish the scalp deeply.

At night, your body naturally shifts into repair mode. Blood circulation improves, stress hormones drop, and your scalp becomes more receptive. A gentle massage before bed can also help you relax and sleep better, which indirectly helps with hair fall.

Night oiling is especially helpful if you’re dealing with hair thinning, dry or flaky scalp, stress-related hair loss, or slow growth. Heavier oils like coconut, sesame, bhringraj, or castor oil (mixed with a lighter oil) work best here. Just keep your hair loosely tied and protect your pillow.

4/11

Morning vs night: Which one actually helps hair grow faster?

If hair growth is your main goal, night oiling clearly has an edge. The oil gets more time to work, your scalp repairs itself overnight, and there’s no pollution interfering. Lower stress levels at night also play a big role in reducing hair fall.

That said, night oiling isn’t for everyone. If it causes itching, headaches, or breakouts around the hairline, it’s not worth forcing. In that case, consistent morning oiling is far better than skipping oil altogether.

Think of it this way, night oiling is for deep nourishment and growth support, while morning oiling is for quick conditioning and scalp activation. Consistency matters far more than the clock.

5/11

The smartest oiling routine for best results

If you want the best of both worlds, mix it up. Oil your hair at night once a week for deep nourishment. On another wash day, do a light morning oil massage for shine and manageability.

Warm the oil slightly before applying, it really helps with absorption. Massage gently using your fingertips, not your nails. And always wash the oil out properly. Leaving residue behind can clog pores and slow growth.

Also remember, oiling works best when the basics are right - balanced food, enough protein and iron, proper sleep, and minimal heat styling. Oil supports hair growth, but it can’t fix everything on its own.

6/11

So, morning or night - which is better?

If hair growth is your priority, night oiling usually wins. But the real secret isn’t timing. It’s choosing a routine that fits into your life without stress.

Your hair responds to care, patience, and consistency. Give it that, and it will grow - slowly, steadily, and healthily.

How long is it okay to leave oil in your hair?

Whether you’re applying oil in the morning or evening, 30 minutes is more than enough. However, if you wish for better nourishment, then keep it for 3 hours and overnight if you have super dry locks.

Best hair oil for overnight treatment

Overnight treatment should always include nourishing ingredients like coconut, argan, and castor. These oils help moisturise, repair, and add shine to the strands without weighing them down. Choose an overnight oil which absorbs well into the strands.

Follow up with a hot towel

Following up your head massage with a hot towel is a game-changer for better absorption of oil. The gentle steam from the towel opens up the pores on your scalp, allowing the oil to penetrate deeper and nourish the roots more effectively. It also improves blood circulation, relaxes the muscles, and gives you that spa-like experience right at home. Plus, the heat helps soften the hair cuticles, making your strands smoother, shinier, and more manageable.

Pro tips to maximise the effect

Always warm the oil before applying, it helps open up pores and enhances absorption.

If you have a very oily scalp, skip castor oil or use less of it.

For dry or frizzy hair, you can add a spoon of almond or olive oil to the mix.

Try a hot towel treatment after applying, wrap your hair in a warm towel for 10 minutes to let the oil soak in deeper.
