Social media loves a weird skincare hack. The latest one doing the rounds? People washing their faces with anti-dandruff shampoo and claiming it cured their acne. Sounds wild, right? But here’s the thing - this trick isn’t totally fake. It just isn’t for everyone.

Dermatologists, including Dr. Sophia Colantonio, say this hack only works in a very specific situation. And if you use it blindly, it can mess up your skin more than help it.

So let’s break it down in simple terms.

When this hack can actually help

This shampoo-on-the-face trick only works if what you have isn’t regular acne at all. Some people get tiny, itchy, same-looking bumps caused by yeast on the skin. It’s often called fungal acne (doctors call it Malassezia folliculitis).

Anti-dandruff shampoos contain antifungal ingredients like ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, or selenium sulfide. These ingredients are made to control yeast on the scalp, and that same yeast can sometimes cause breakouts on the face, chest, or back.

In these cases, using an anti-dandruff shampoo as a short-contact wash (leave it on for a minute or two, then rinse) a couple of times a week can help calm things down.

​When it’s a bad idea

For most people, acne is bacterial, not fungal. Think whiteheads, blackheads, painful pimples, or cystic acne. In these cases, anti-dandruff shampoo won’t fix the problem.

Worse, scalp shampoos are made for thick skin, not your face. Use them too often and you could end up with dryness, burning, peeling, or a damaged skin barrier. And once your skin barrier is messed up, breakouts usually get worse, not better.

​What dermatologists warn about

Dr. Colantonio has pointed out that this trend can be useful for very oily skin types or for people dealing with seborrheic dermatitis or fungal breakouts. But only if the right product is used, and only in moderation.

She’s also warned that using these shampoos incorrectly can seriously damage your skin barrier. Translation: just because something went viral doesn’t mean your face will like it.

So… should you try it?

If your acne keeps coming back in tiny, itchy clusters and nothing else seems to work, there’s a chance it could be fungal. In that case, a dermatologist can confirm it and tell you the safest way to treat it.

But if you’re dealing with normal acne, stick to proper skincare and treatments made for facial skin. Shampoo belongs on your head, not your cheeks - unless a doctor says otherwise.
