Know the truth about scalp vs strand oiling

Hair oiling has always been an important cornerstone of beauty rituals in India for centuries; the ritual of 'oil champi' is deeply rooted in haircare traditions. But in modern haircare conversations, a new debate has emerged: whether oiling should focus on the scalp or the strands. Well, both methods offer their own benefits and purposes, but let’s understand which is eventually better for hair growth and blesses you with a stronger, longer, and healthier mane.

How is scalp oiling beneficial?

Scalp oiling is the technique of oil directly being poured on the scalp, which is usually followed by a gentle massage. This method mainly stimulates the blood flow, delivers the important nutrients to hair follicles, and creates an overall healthier environment for efficient hair growth. This technique also hydrates the scalp, reduces issues of dandruff, itchiness and flakiness, and improves the overall health of your scalp, which helps in strong hair growth over time. But remember that excess oil application on the scalp can clog scalp pores, weigh down fine hair, and worsen issues of dandruff.

How is strand oiling beneficial?

Strand oiling mainly focuses on the application of oil only around the mid-lengths and ends of the locks, avoiding the scalp region. This coats the hair shaft and reduces friction that occur during styling and brushing. Creates a protective barrier around the strands and prevents moisture loss and frizz. Oiling the ends makes your hair look glossier and smoother, whereas the protective layer shields the hair shaft from damage, mainly caused by styling tools. But too much application can make your hair look greasy and may also weigh down the locks, making them look flat.

So, which is eventually better for hair growth?

The truth is that both methods play very different roles, where scalp oiling improves scalp conditions and supports your follicle health, and strand oiling protects the hair shaft and prevents overall breakage issues. However, hair length usually depends on how well your hair strands resist breakage, making both equally important. However, you need to understand that oiling does not directly promote hair growth, rather, it strengthens the hair and eventually reduces damage, allowing your locks to grow long over time.

This is the ideal hair oiling routine

For best results, combine both techniques. Oil the scalp twice a week for 10-15 minutes to stimulate circulation. Then apply oil to mid-length and to the ends, which will seal moisture and prevent breakage. Leave the oil to be absorbed for around an hour or two, and then wash your locks and scalp with a gentle shampoo. Try using lightweight hair oils like coconut, argan, almond, and jojoba oil for better results.
