6 memorable characters created by Agatha Christie

If the world of mystery and crime fiction is being discussed, Agatha Christie's will always pop up. The ‘Queen of Mystery,’ Dame Agatha Christie was born on September 15, 1890, in the town of Torquay, England. Her name is synonymous with intrigue, suspense, and the art of weaving mind-bending mysteries that have stood the test of time.

With over 80 novels, countless short stories, and a flair for the unexpected, Agatha Christie has left an indelible mark on the literary landscape. But beyond the sheer numbers lies a rich tapestry of characters that have binded themselves into our collective imagination. Today, on her birth anniversary, we pay homage to some of these famous and unforgettable personas that continue to captivate readers around the globe.

Hercule Poirot

Hercule Poirot is perhaps Christie's most iconic creation. The dapper Belgian detective with his meticulous moustache and ‘little grey cells’ has solved countless mysteries, from 'Murder on the Orient Express' to 'Death on the Nile.' His sharp wit and keen powers of observation make him a beloved figure in the world of detective fiction.

Miss Marple

In complete contrast to Poirot, we have Miss Jane Marple, an elderly spinster with an uncanny ability to solve crimes in the quaint village of St. Mary Mead. Miss Marple's wisdom, garnered from her quiet observations of human nature, proves invaluable in cracking the toughest cases. Her character teaches us that age is no barrier to wisdom and insight.

Tommy and Tuppence Beresford

The dynamic duo of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford bring a delightful blend of youthful enthusiasm and amateur sleuthing to Christie's works. From their debut in ‘The Secret Adversary’ to their later adventures, these two characters offer readers a refreshing change from the traditional detective.

Colonel Arbuthnot

A character from ‘Murder on the Orient Express,’ Colonel Arbuthnot is just one of the many suspects in the infamous murder case. His mysterious past and complex personality add depth to the plot and showcase Christie's talent for crafting multi-faceted characters.

Ariadne Oliver

Ariadne Oliver, a fictional character within Christie's own fiction, is a renowned detective novelist who frequently calls upon Hercule Poirot to solve her cases. Her quirky personality, love for apples, and disdain for her own creation, the Finnish detective Sven Hjerson, make her a charming and memorable character in her own right.

Captain Arthur Hastings

Last but not least, we have Captain Arthur Hastings, Poirot's close friend and frequent companion in solving crimes. His slightly bumbling nature and unwavering loyalty to Poirot provide a perfect foil to the brilliant detective.

Why have you left out Chief Inspector Japp? His hurrying to conclusions, irritation on seeing Poirot at the same time paying attention to Poirot's assessment is always a treat. In the long run the two become friends.
