Rathbones Folio 2021 shortlist for those who love great writing

The Rathbones Folio prize awards the best new work of literature published in the English language during a given year, regardless of which form it is. So the winner could be fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Here is their shortlist for 2021:

This book is a non-fiction. It is a personal reflection, about loss and grief, art and life written in a small narrative.

Indelicacy by Amina Cain

This short book is a fiction. It follows a cleaning lady at a museum of art who dreams of doing more. It's a haunting book with many themes, such as feminism, the search for one's destiny and society.

As You Were by Elaine Feeney

This Irish novel shows how close to the present some dark times of Irish history are. It's set in a hospital ward where we learn about the stories of all those in there, and of the kindness and the strength women possess.

Poor by Caleb Femi

This book is a poetry compilation on the lives of young black men and what shapes them. It's the debut collection by the author.

My Darling from the Lions by Rachel Long

This book is also a debut poetry collection. The poems tell tales of funny family habits, the dangers of the dating world and other such aspects of life.

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

This book is a memoir by the author of the bestseller, 'Her Body and Other Parties'. She writes about her life and domestic abuse.

A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ní Ghríofa

This interesting novel follow two authors of different generations, one herself and one Eibhlín Dubh an Irish noblewoman, who, on discovering her husband has been murdered, drank handfuls of his blood and composed an extraordinary poem.

The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey

This is a feminist retelling of an old Taino myth. Set in a small Caribbean fishing village, we follow the dark love story of a man and a mermaid.
