This day was first celebrated in Paraguay in 1958 as International Friendship Day. But as per legends, it first originated from Hallmark cards in the 1930s, by Joyce Hall, the founder of the card company. It started as a marketing strategy. This marketing strategy later took the shape of an official holiday and in 1935 US Congress announced the first Sunday of August as an International Friendship day.
