Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab is a prominent festival for people who follow Sikhism. This festival is celebrated by Sikhs all across the globe to mark the birth anniversary of their first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev. It is one of the holiest festivals for the Sikh community. The day is celebrated on the full moon day of the Kartik month as per the Hindu calendar. Hence, it is also known as Kartik Poornima. This year, Gurpurab will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

This year’s Gurpurab is even more special as it will mark the 553th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Guru Nanak Dev ji is considered as a preacher of peace and harmony.

He was born in a village named Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, which is at present located near Lahore, Pakistan. This place is also popularly known as Nankana Sahib. The teaching of the first Sikh guru is preserved in the holy texts, which is known as Guru Granth Sahib.

The celebration of Gurpurab or the Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev starts 15 days before his birth anniversary. Sikhs start doing pheris 15 days before the celebration. Two days before the birth anniversary, Akhand Path (a non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib) is held in all the Gurdwaras and a day before the birthday, a procession, called Nagarkirtan, is organised.
