Lohri

Originally a festival of the Punjabi’s, Lohri is celebrated with great fervour. The festival is celebrated every year at the beginning of the year to mark new beginnings and happiness. The harvest festival which falls on the 13th of January this year is celebrated the night before Makar Sankranti during the month of Paush or Magh in a grand way. Lohri is considered as the shortest day of the year and it commemorates the passing of the winter solstice while welcoming the season of spring. The festival is celebrated by lighting a bonfire at night and offering popcorn and peanuts while circumambulating the Lohri fire and praying for prosperity and health. People celebrate this occasion in full swing by assembling in groups and performing the traditional folk dances like Bhangra and Gidda. It is celebrated mainly in regions like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh where the Punjabi population is high.
