Supernal events in November: From lunar eclipse, meteor shower to Spica proximity, night skies are going to be special in November

This November, look at the vast sky to weave your dreams into it. With several celestial events slated for the November nights, the sky will definitely be a visual treat!

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has forecasted major astronomical events in the month of November. From lunar eclipse to meteor shower these supernal events will be seen during night time this month.

On November 4, Friday, the moon will hover near the giant planet, Jupiter.

Jupiter, which still shines brightly at a magnitude of -2.8 will lie on the path of the ecliptic with the moon.

The waxing moon has already passed near the bright star Antares on October 27, Saturn on November 1, and will pass Jupiter on November 4 before an eclipse on November 8.

A complete lunar eclipse will be seen on November 8.

This lunar eclipse will be seen almost a fortnight after the partial solar eclipse. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon align. "In a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra. When the Moon is within the umbra, it will turn a reddish hue. Lunar eclipses are sometimes called “Blood Moons” because of this phenomenon," explains NASA.

For this eclipse, the Moon will enter the partial shadow of the Earth at 3:02 a.m. EST. At 4:09 a.m. the full shadow will begin shifting across the Moon.

On November 11, the Moon will be seen stationed directly between Mars and the star Elnath. Elnath is the second brightest star in the constellation Taurus after Aldebaran.

On November 16, a third quarter moon will be visible.

On this day, the moon will be three-fourths of the way through its monthly journey and half of its illuminated side will be visible.

As per NASA, the third quarter moon will rise around midnight and will set around noon.

On November 20, the crescent shaped Moon will be seen above the giant star Spica.

Spica is a massive star, 10 times bigger than the Sun and is 12,000 times more luminous. It is situated 260 light years away.

On November 28, the crescent shaped Moon will be seen below Saturn.

On November 30, the first quarter moon will be visible. The Moon is a quarter of the way through its monthly journey and you see half of its illuminated side. A first quarter moon rises around noon and sets around midnight. It’s high in the sky in the evening, says NASA.

A meteor shower, named Leonid, will be active throughout November, NASA has confirmed. It peaks on November 18 with 15-20 meteors per hour, it says. The meteors will radiate from the constellation Leo hence the name Leonid.
