Annular Solar Eclipse 2019 Images: Check out these breathtaking pictures of the year's last Surya Grahan from India

Skywatchers have been treated to a cosmic spectacle on Thursday with the last Solar Eclipse of the season. The Solar Eclipse or Surya Grahan began around 8 am and ended at 10:57 am as per the Indian Standard Time (IST). The rare celestial event was witnessed majorly in the Eastern hemisphere when the Moon eclipsed the Sun to form a “ring of fire” in the sky.

A Solar Eclipse takes place when the Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring Earth's view of the Sun completely. However, this was an Annular Solar Eclipse as the Moon covered only the Sun's Center, leaving its outer edges visible, forming a “ring of fire”. This happened because the Moon is quite far away from the Earth right now.

However, this year's last celestial event was only visible in some countries of Southern Asia including India, Sri Lanka, UAE, Sumatra, Australia, Philippines and Singapore. People living in the Southern part of India had the opportunity to witness the Solar Eclipse properly, while the resident of the northern Indian could only see a partial Solar Eclipse. People in different parts of the country used special filters to view this spectacular cosmic event in the sky. Special prayers were offered in different temples across the country and devotees took a holy dip in the river on this occasion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter handle and said that like every other Indian he was also enthusiastic about the Solar Eclipse, but could not see it due to "cloud cover". However, he got a glimpse of the eclipse in Kozhikode and other parts on the live stream.
