Fashion at its most harrowing

The world of fashion thrives on fearless creativity, often pushing the limits of fantasy, art, and expression. Designers routinely dive into surreal garden landscapes or transform the runway into avant-garde installations that blur the lines between style and performance art. But with this unrestrained vision comes provocation, shows that elicit gasps, awe, or outright shock. Much like other creative industries, fashion isn't immune to controversy or polarising reactions. From Dior’s theatrical spectacles to Alexander McQueen’s eerie masterpieces, here’s a look at some of the most haunting and unforgettable fashion shows the industry has ever seen.

John Galliano AW07

In 2007, designer John Galliano released a gang of maddening and deranged fashion characters on the runway for his AW07 show that was inspired by the sordid streets of 1930s Pigalle. The showcase featured veiled streetwalkers, creepy dancing girls, and models carrying eerie broken dolls. The set designer covered the show space with live goldfish and skeletons, turning the stage into a dark circus.

Alexander McQueen AW06

His ‘Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victim collection was released in 1992 and had a dark, eclectic aesthetic filled with cuts of human hair on jackets, exploring the streets of decay, deprivation, and desolation. The collection featured winged detailing with a mourning black atmosphere, paying tribute to the dark and despairing political state of Scotland. With violin strings in the background, an ethereal Kate Moss stole the show in a smoke- and antler-detailing outfit that paid tribute to the demise of the tragic lives.

Chanel SS13

Karl Lagerfeld’s neoclassic tale was filled with original folklore and raised from the dark, where he decked the Grand Palais into a creepy forest. Creating an unsettling feeling of despair and being lost in the creations, he dressed his models in chiffons and embellished florals that came in with an underscored dramatic gothic guise. Fascinated by velvet and ribbon, the models had mesh eyelashes and graphite-pigmented makeup, turning the designer’s dream into a dark yet uncomfortable fantasy to watch.

Christian Dior Haute Couture AW00

One of the most celebrated designers across the globe took the audience on a spooky journey that was filled with whiplash trash rising from the innocence. Descending onto the runway, models were seen in half-girl, half-gorilla, and skeleton detailings, while some carried a demented Marie Antoinette aesthetic that looked unsettling, forcing people to leave the show.

Ann Demeulemeester AW13

Known for her dark and romantic designs, the designer’s 2013 release created a haunting aura with a soundtrack of Nick Cave’s ‘O Children’ playing in the background. Creating a monochrome palette, she fashioned women in gauze veils, pagan-like silhouettes, and appliqué jackets with layers and poetic detailings, which looked hazy and disturbing. The paradoxical track with a haunting set and echo made the whole show unbearable for some.
