How Giorgio Armani chose to preserve his brand ethos instead of handing down the empire to his family
It should come as no surprise that Giorgio Armani was a wellspring of good advice when it came to making smart wardrobe investments. On September 4, 2025, the 91-year-old fashion designer passed away in Milan. His death closes a remarkable chapter in global fashion, as he was the architect of modern elegance and established new aesthetics, like quiet luxury, long before it became a trend.
From creating power suits in the ’80s to shaping the image of Hollywood royalty, his brand spanned couture, home décor, hotels, perfumes, and more, always with a future-proof approach to style. Unlike many of his contemporaries who sold to luxury conglomerates like LVMH, Armani stood strong and remained independent, building a company worth more than $10 billion.
But with his passing, the biggest question remains front and centre: who will inherit Armani’s wealth and take charge of the empire he leaves behind? Giorgio Armani never married or had children. His long-time partner and company co-founder, Sergio Galeotti, passed away in 1985, making the brand his true family.
Because there is no direct heir, the brand’s succession story is being closely followed. But the absence of children does not mean Armani left his business without a plan. In fact, he had been preparing for nearly a decade, and, in true Armani style, his solution begins with an unconventional idea.
The ‘Inner Circle’ steps in
The Giorgio Armani Foundation is expected to hold the controlling stake of the empire, with a mission to preserve the brand’s identity and independence, while also supporting social and cultural charities.
While the foundation will own the group, leadership is expected to fall to his trusted ‘inner circle’ loyal team members who have served Armani for decades and are more like family. Armani was known for maintaining a firm grip on his brand, and in the process, he built a devoted team that stood by him.
Leading this team is Leo Dell’Orco, Armani’s closest confidant and head of the men’s collection. Often described as his “right hand,” Dell’Orco has been deeply involved in creative decisions for years and is expected to play a central role in guiding the brand’s future. He will be joined by group CEO Giuseppe Marsocci and deputy CEO Alessandro Brusone.
Armani’s nieces, Silvana and Roberta, have also played key roles in the company, Silvana as head of womenswear design, and Roberta overseeing celebrity and global relations. This dream team will carry forward his vision, offering a thread of family continuity even without a direct heir.
On the subject, celebrated Indian designer Suneet Varma shared his perspective. He said, “I feel Giorgio Armani’s decision to entrust his brand to a foundation and loyal inner circle rather than family is a powerful statement about legacy and vision. It reflects a deep commitment to preserving the brand’s identity, his values, and creative integrity beyond personal lineage.”
He further added, “In an industry where heritage and consistency are key, Armani ensures his life’s work remains timeless, relevant, and protected—guided by those who understand its essence and share his unwavering passion for excellence. It’s an extremely wise decision.”
Armani’s passing is not just the loss of another designer; it is the loss of a cultural icon. His brand remains one of the few to be fully Italian and fiercely independent, a source of national pride. His Armani/Teatro will always stand as a heartfelt landmark in Milan.
With creations celebrated for their elegant silhouettes and sharp precision, Armani proved his mastery time and again, just as Anna Wintour once summed it up: “Armani dresses the wife, and Versace dresses the mistress.”
