Melania Trump picks a black and white gown for President Trump’s inaugural ball

First Lady Melania Trump chose a black and white gown to the nines for President Donald Trump’s inaugural ball. On Monday evening, Melania walked hand in hand with Trump, wearing the white strapless gown with a geometric black trim and a small slit.

Melania Trump’s gown was designed by her longtime style advisor Hervé Pierre. Pierre had designed Melania's first inaugural gown, and the resemblance both have is striking. She borrowed a diamond broach created by Harry Winston in 1955 and restyled it as a choker for the special occasion.

Herve Pierre shared a sketch of the geometrical black trim, and recalled how it started as a scribble and evolved into this beautiful ensemble. “How it started… a simple scribble with a marker on a piece of paper can be the beginning of an idea!” the designer wrote on Instagram.


Pierre also shared a sketch of the whole outfit and added, “It was such an honor to create the dress for the First Lady Melania Trump tonight… I can’t thank her enough… it was a wonderful project, a great collaboration… as always!!!”


Melania Trump’s outfit for her first inaugural ball in 2017, was created by Pierre. Back then she wore an equally dramatic, off-the-shoulder vanilla gown with a high slit and red silk belt. Eight years later as Pierre created a second ensemble for the first lady, the outfit was all things chic and statement.



Meanwhile, earlier in the day for her husband Trump’s inauguration ceremony, Melania wore a navy double-breasted coat, navy pencil skirt and ivory blouse from New York designer Adam Lippes. In a statement, the designer said, “The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump. Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world.” She accessorized it with a wide-brimmed hat designed by American milliner Eric Javits, which shaded her eyes, leaving an air of mystery.
