Which Indian city is known as the ‘city of embroidery?' Here’s the answer
India is one such country where diversity will be witnessed in every lane. From certain regions to certain cities, each area is popular for a single craft or art that defines its cultural identity. One such Indian city is known for its fine needlework and delicate patterns, where every lane and shop reflects creativity, elegance, and absolute patience.
This skilled craftsmanship thus made it internationally popular, and today it is also known as the City of Embroidery in India. It is Uttar Pradesh’s capital city, Lucknow. Popular for Chikankari, this traditional art began during the Mughal period and grew under the royal support of the kings and nawabs.
Today, the city is filled with skilled artisans who create fine designs on light fabrics using detailed handwork, making Lucknow proudly hold this title. For hundreds of years, the city has been home to authentic Chikankari, which is a traditional embroidery done using white thread on light-coloured fabrics.
It is known for its soft patterns, neat stitches, and fine designs. Artisans here use intricate techniques like phanda, jaali, murri, and shadow work. Each of these pieces is made by hand and requires intense care and patience. Emerging during the Mughal era, Chikankari was only worn by nobles and royal families.
The Nawabs of Awadh soon encouraged this craft, via which it got its royal touch, making Lucknow’s history popular. Many Chikankari garments often take several weeks to complete, as the work demands experience, concentration, and steady hands. It is not just an art but a major source of income for the city. From providing employment to women, the items are sold across the country and are also exported internationally.
Lucknow’s Chikankari art has also received a GI tag, which protects its originality. This has increased its global demand, whereas top-notch designers and celebrities across the nation are often seen embracing this embroidery, making it a staple in nearly every Indian woman’s wardrobe.
