Who is Suhail Kwatra? Indian-American celebrity stylist accused of Rs 3.58 crore theft - Here’s what we know
Indian-American stylist Suhail Kwatra, who goes by the name of Fashion Whisperer, is facing larceny charges for allegedly stealing $429,400, i.e., around ₹3,85,03,374, from luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue through an elaborate returns scheme.
A popular name among Boston’s elite social circle, the 43-year-old Kwatra ruined his reputation after building a successful name in high fashion, a dream for many Indian immigrants.
The go-to stylist at the luxury store Saks Fifth Avenue, he is a well-known figure with an elite clientele, which includes the ex-wife of Red Sox legend David Ortiz. This kingdom of high glamour came crashing down when the high society discovered that Kwatra is embroiled in larceny charges for allegedly stealing from the store via an elaborate and clever returns scheme.
Kwatra has counter-alleged that Saks Fifth Avenue is conspiring against him because he declined a retention bonus with the retail mogul and considered a better opportunity with a global luxury retailer brand.
According to the Boston Herald, a criminal complaint was filed in Boston Municipal Court, after which Kwatra was detained following an internal investigation. This led to the police intervention at the Saks store. The prosecutors alleged that when wealthy clients ordered luxury goods but forgot to pick them up, Kwatra processed the returns and converted them into refunds in the form of Saks gift cards.
He used these gift cards to buy items from the store. This scheme allegedly netted him around $400,000, i.e., Rs 3.5 crore worth of merchandise, between September and November alone. It is also reported that Kwatra provided handwritten letters during his separation period, where he admitted to mishandling Rs 3.5 crore and gave a detailed account.

Kwatra has now deleted his Instagram account, where he was seen wearing some of the fraudulently purchased clothing from the store. Although he has denied all the allegations and claimed that the confession was obtained under stress.
Kwatra recently released a statement to The Daily Beast where he said, “In my professional career over the last twenty years at Saks, I have always strived to adhere to company policies and provide the very best service to my clients. I am confident that when the legal process plays out, it will be shown that Saks retaliated against me for considering a global position with another large retailer.”
