Tabu takes over New York in a crushed silk Angrakha by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla

India’s cinema icon Tabu made waves at the Dune: Prophecy premiere in New York, stepping out in a custom Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla creation that was as timeless as it was captivating. Her ensemble, crafted from over fifty metres of pure Khadi silk, combined a classic Angrakha silhouette with the signature crushed texture of the designers’ renowned “Crushed Silk” collection. This couture masterpiece was a tribute to Indian artistry and an expression of the elegance Tabu brought to the global stage.

Designed to highlight Tabu’s sculpted shoulders and tall frame, the garment flowed effortlessly, its luxurious texture achieving a mesmerising effect. The ‘Crushed Silk’ technique, a hallmark of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s work, brought the Angrakha to life in new dimensions. Developed serendipitously 38 years ago, this technique imbued the fabric with a rippled texture that was both understated and dramatic, creating a hypnotic play of light and shadow with each movement.


With its hand-tailored finish, the ensemble was a masterful blend of Indian heritage and western couture. The luxurious silk—traditional Khadi—conveyed both grandeur and minimalism, a perfect choice for Tabu’s poised and powerful presence. Each fold and texture celebrated the fabric’s fluidity, as well as the heritage craft that underpinned it. The use of Khadi itself was symbolic, blending India’s artisanal roots with a couture touch that seamlessly fit the international red carpet.

Set to feature in the HBO series Dune: Prophecy streaming November 17 on Max, Tabu’s NY appearance in this custom piece set a high bar for her character’s introduction, bringing a sense of dignified mystery to the role.
