Why did Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle always swear by white sarees - Faith, fashion, or strategy?

Asha Bhosle, fondly known as Asha Tai, believed that the saree was an incredibly graceful garment that elegantly concealed a woman’s curves. Deeply rooted in India’s rich culture and history, she felt that wearing a saree was her way of celebrating that heritage every day. Another reason she preferred it was because of her son, Anand, who would shower her with endless compliments whenever she wore one - something she truly cherished. That said, Asha Tai also embraced softer shades over time, often stepping out in pastel-toned Banarasi and Kanjeevaram sarees for special and red-carpet occasions.

In an interview, Asha Bhosle spoke about the time when, during their prime era, she chose to wear a pink drape, and Lata Mangeshkar softly gave her the side eye. But slowly she began adding colours to her wardrobe, starting with the shade of pink. Asha Bhosle, however, had the slight edge to switch to a salwar suit and trousers when she travelled, but her son refused to see his mother in anything but six yards of pure elegance.

Asha Bhosle passed away due to a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on 12th April at the age of 92. Her funeral will be held today at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. The news of her demise was announced by the Minister of Cultural Affairs of Maharashtra, Mr Ashish Shelar. One of the most iconic and versatile voices of Indian music, her demise marked the end of an extraordinary era that shaped the sound of Hindi cinema for around eight decades.
