How to spot a real diamond?

Two samples of carbon crystals, which are clear and give off a kaleidoscope of spectral colours under direct sunlight, may appear to be identical. However, one is a billion years old, and the other is grown in a laboratory. Both are diamonds, but the first one is a natural diamond created by forces deep within the Earth, and the other is made in a lab with similar chemical, physical, and optical properties. So, will there be any difference? Let’s take a look.

What is a diamond?

A diamond is not just another material found anywhere on Earth, but a rare gem made from pure carbon crystals used in the gem and jewellery industry. Diamonds are essentially pure carbon, and natural ones often contain nitrogen, which gives them a yellow tint, sometimes blended with blue. Natural diamonds also contain tiny bits of foreign material trapped in the still-forming crystal, which began its journey millions of years ago.

But then, what is a lab-grown diamond?

Laboratory-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds, entered the jewellery market a few years ago. They are identical to natural diamonds, with very subtle differences that can mainly be detected by trained gemologists. These diamonds were initially produced in laboratories in the 1950s for industrial use. However, it was only in 2010 that they entered the gem and jewellery industry in commercial quantities. Although you cannot distinguish between the two with the naked eye, professional help can make it clear.

Start with the inscription on the diamond girdle

This is one of the easiest ways to know whether your diamond is lab-grown or a blessing from nature. Examine the inscription on the girdle of the diamond. Every diamond bought from an authentic retailer or wholesaler comes with an inscription. Lab-grown diamonds are clearly inscribed as lab-made, lab-created, created, or cultured. However, you might need a special instrument to read this inscription.

Examine the diamond fluorescence

Diamond fluorescence is the ability of a diamond to emit a soft coloured glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. Fluorescence can easily be examined by experts in labs, where lab-grown diamonds have a tendency to fluoresce more than natural diamonds. The colour reflected in the process will differ in both. While lab-made diamonds often reflect orange, mined diamonds usually reflect blue.

Check the grading report

This is one of the easiest ways to tell whether your diamond is natural or lab-made. Every authentic diamond, whether natural or lab-grown, is graded and provided with a certificate of authenticity. Both are graded for the 4Cs, i.e., colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight. The diamond grading report should clearly mention the origin of the diamond, whether it was lab-grown or natural, giving you complete clarity.

Why are lab-grown diamonds so popular?

Lab-grown diamonds have become incredibly popular in recent years because they offer the same sparkle, brilliance, and durability as natural diamonds but at a fraction of the cost and without the ethical concerns linked to traditional mining. With growing awareness around sustainability and transparency, many consumers, especially millennials and Gen Z, are choosing lab-grown stones as a conscious luxury choice. These diamonds are created in controlled environments using advanced technology, making them eco-friendly, conflict-free, and completely traceable. Plus, since they’re chemically and visually identical to mined diamonds, they’ve become the perfect blend of beauty, value, and responsibility.

Smart and guilt-free

Lab-grown diamonds come with a host of advantages that make them increasingly popular, especially among modern Indian couples who value both beauty and ethics. Firstly, they’re eco-friendly and conflict-free, as they’re created in controlled labs without harming the environment or involving unethical mining practices. Secondly, lab-grown diamonds offer the same sparkle, durability, and chemical structure as natural ones, meaning you are not compromising on quality or brilliance. The best part? They’re significantly more affordable, often costing 30-40% less than natural diamonds of similar size and clarity. This allows buyers to opt for larger stones or more intricate designs within the same budget. Additionally, lab-grown diamonds come with full transparency and certification, giving you peace of mind that your purchase is sustainable, smart, and guilt-free.
