How to know if a diamond is natural or lab grown

Your real guide to identifying natural and lab-grown diamonds

Buying a diamond is an emotional moment. Whether it’s for an engagement ring, a Diwali gift, or simply a treat-yourself purchase, that sparkling stone holds meaning far beyond its carats. But here’s the tricky part, in today’s market, not all diamonds come from the earth. Some are lab-grown, created in high-tech machines that mimic the natural process. And while both can look equally stunning, knowing the difference can make a big impact on your budget, ethics, and even your future investment.

So, how do you figure out if the diamond in your jewellery box (or on your wishlist) is natural or lab-made? Let’s decode it, desi style.

2/8

What’s the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?

To start with, both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties. The only difference lies in their origin story.

Natural diamonds are formed deep under the earth’s surface over billions of years through immense heat and pressure. They are mined from the earth, often from countries like South Africa, Russia, and Canada. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created in a controlled environment using advanced technology. Scientists use carbon (the same element that makes natural diamonds) and simulate the natural diamond-forming process in a matter of weeks instead of millennia.

In India, lab-grown diamonds have become increasingly popular, not only because they’re more affordable but also because they’re seen as an ethical, sustainable alternative. Surat, the diamond capital of the world, is now at the forefront of this revolution, with many jewellers proudly offering lab-grown options alongside mined ones.

The sparkle test

Honestly? Not really. Even expert jewellers can’t always tell the difference with the naked eye. Both types of diamonds have the same brilliance, sparkle, and fire. But there are some subtle hints you can watch out for.

Lab-grown diamonds tend to have fewer inclusions or imperfections since they’re created under controlled conditions. Natural diamonds often carry unique marks, tiny birthmarks, if you will that were formed under the earth. If your diamond looks too flawless, it might be lab-grown.

That said, this isn’t foolproof. A skilled jeweller can polish a natural diamond so well that it appears spotless. The safest way to confirm the origin is through certification or professional testing.

4/8

Always ask for certification

Every diamond, whether mined or man-made, should come with a grading certificate from a recognised authority. For Indian buyers, the most trusted names include GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), and SGL (Solitaire Gemmological Laboratories).

If you look at the certificate, it’ll mention whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown. It also details the stone’s 4Cs - cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Think of it as your diamond’s Aadhaar card, proof of identity, authenticity, and quality.

Also, keep in mind that a natural diamond’s certificate will not carry words like “laboratory-grown,” “created,” or “HPHT/CVD” (the two main lab diamond creation methods). If you see those, it’s definitely lab-made.

5/8

The price clue

If you are comparing two diamonds that look exactly alike, but one costs significantly less, there’s a good chance the cheaper one is lab-grown. Lab diamonds can cost 40–70% less than their natural counterparts.

That doesn’t make them inferior, it just means the supply is easier to control and doesn’t rely on mining. For many modern Indian buyers, especially Gen Z shoppers and ethically conscious brides, this price difference is a huge plus. Why spend ₹5 lakhs on a natural diamond when you can get the same sparkle in a lab-grown one for half the price and without guilt about environmental impact?

However, if you’re buying diamonds as an investment, natural ones tend to retain value better. Lab-grown diamonds, while beautiful, don’t have the same resale value since they can be easily reproduced.

6/8

Ask your jeweller the right questions

When in doubt, don’t shy away from asking your jeweller directly. In fact, a good jeweller will be transparent about the origin of their stones. Here are some smart questions to ask:

“Is this diamond mined or lab-created?”

“Can I see the certification?”

“Who issued the grading report - GIA, IGI, or another body?”

“Does this diamond have a laser inscription?”

Yes, laser inscription is another great tip! Many certified diamonds, especially lab-grown ones, have tiny microscopic markings on the girdle (the outer edge of the stone) indicating their type and serial number. A jeweller can show this under magnification.

7/8

The emotional choice

At the end of the day, whether your diamond is mined or man-made doesn’t define its beauty. What matters most is what it symbolises. In India, diamonds are tied to emotions, from wedding jewellery and anniversary gifts to heirlooms passed through generations.

If you love the charm of something ancient and naturally formed, a natural diamond might tug at your heart more. But if you’re drawn to modern innovation, ethical sourcing, and affordability, a lab-grown diamond is your perfect match.

8/8

Check out the sparkle

With India becoming a hub for lab-grown diamonds and luxury brands embracing the trend, both types of stones now hold prestige. Whether you Are shopping from a big-name jeweller in Mumbai or a boutique designer in Jaipur, just remember one golden rule, always check the certificate before you check out the sparkle.

Because, after all, a diamond whether born under the earth or in a lab, shines brightest when it’s chosen with clarity, confidence, and a touch of heart.
