Introduction to Maharashtrian Naths

Marathi naths are not just ornaments; they are a centuries-old tradition, believed to bring luck and prosperity to their wearer. Each ornament carries its own tale and history, and today, we’re focusing on the Maharashtrian nath, a nose ring worn in the state and within the community for religious, ceremonial, and decorative purposes. With its intricate design and distinct, almost round shape, there are four popular styles you can choose from to find the one that suits you best.

Peshwai Nath

Peshwai Nath is a traditional Maharashtrian nose ring, known for its intricate design, and has been in the Marathi culture since the Peshwa era, i.e., around 300 years ago. A symbol of heritage and grandeur, this nath features several strands of silver beads strung together with colourful glass beads and precious stones. The nath basically features geometric shapes and floral motifs with golden plating.

Gondhal Nath

Gondhal nath refers to the traditional temple nath named after Lord Shiva in Gondhal, which signifies ascetics and yogis. It is a traditional nath worn by women as a symbol of fertility, marriage, and prosperity and also with religious significance. It features coloured glass, silver beads, and precious stones in the shape of religious symbols like gods and the Trishul or geometric shapes.

Moti Nath

Moti Nath features several strands of silver beads strung with precious stones worn by Maharashtrian women, which include intricate designs of flowers and geometric shapes. They also feature religious symbols but are only decorated with stunning, small white motis or pearls, which look stunning during festivities.

Banu Nath

Another popular type of Marathi nath jewellery is the Banu nath, which looks more or less like the Peshwai nath and is decorated with beads, colourful glass beads, and stunning stones. Known for their intricate gold plating, Banu naths are small in size and are a perfect fit for women who are looking for something subtle yet impactful.

Elegance in tradition

The Marathi nath has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries and was once worn by queens and women daily. Today, it is mostly reserved for ceremonial occasions. Traditionally, a Maharashtrian nath is crafted from intricate silver beads, strung together with colourful hand-painted glass beads in elaborate designs. Precious stones such as rubies, diamonds, and emeralds are often added for extra sparkle, creating a look that’s both pious and iconic. Let’s take a look at four beautiful Marathi nath styles that are perfect for Ganesh Puja 2025.
