Why are Chanderi sarees so special?

Originating in the 13th century from the historic town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, the fabric is known for its royal allure and weaving tradition that gradually flourished across Central India. Influencing many other regions such as Gujarat, Malwa, and Mewar, this industry is long associated with fine craftsmanship and utter royalty. An epitome and symbol of fine royal taste, let’s see 5 ways in which you can take care of your vintage Chanderi drape.

Washing and cleaning methods

To keep your zari and embroidery pieces intact, always opt for the process of dry cleaning. It is the safest method, and try to leave it in the hands of professional dry cleaners who understand how to handle such vintage heritage pieces. However, if there’s a minor stain, avoid washing the entire fabric and opt for spot cleaning. By dabbing a cotton pad soaked in cold water on the stained area, you can instantly get rid of the stain. If necessary, mix a small amount of detergent, but do not rub the fabric, as it will damage the weave and colour.

Keep an eye while rinsing and drying

If you have used detergent on the fabric, then gently rinse it with cold water to wash away any soap residue. But, avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. On the other hand, if you’re drying the saree, then avoid direct sunlight at all costs, as harsh rays fade colours and weaken the threads. Therefore, you can air dry your saree in a shaded or well-ventilated space. Also, spread the saree flat by using a padded hanger to avoid any creases.

How to iron your Chanderi saree?

Step 1: Use a low to medium heat setting and never press the iron directly onto the fabric.
Step 2: Place a cotton cloth over the saree and then iron it, which adds a protective layer, especially around the zari or embroidered portions.

Step 3: For sarees having a heavy motif or metallic work, avoid ironing those sections completely.

How to fold a Chanderi saree?

The soft texture of a Chanderi saree creates a graceful flow with a timeless appeal. To preserve these qualities, one needs to fold them with care. Now, align the pleats neatly and follow the natural weave or design pattern while folding it slowly. This process helps prevent stubborn creases and further protects delicate embroidery or zari work from getting disturbed.

Ways to store your Chanderi saree

Step 1: Use a breathable fabric bag like muslin or cotton instead, with a plastic cover on the inside that allows minimal air circulation and protects the fabric from dampness and yellowing.

Step 2: Place it in a silica gel sachet with naphthalene balls wrapped in a cloth to prevent moisture build-up and insect damage.
Step 3: Avoid folding along the same lines repeatedly, and re-fold your saree every few months to prevent deep or permanent creases.
Step 4: Air it out every 6 months and again gently unfold it. You can hang it in a shaded and ventilated area that will maintain its freshness and prevent mildew issues.
