5 new ways to wear Turtlenecks this winter

With a frill skirt, corset dress or printed pants, turtlenecks are the winter staples that can be layered with any fashion style to make a statement. While many would argue, the true essence of fashion and experimentation arrives when the winter chill challenges you to cover up, but in style. From long overcoats to capris, people go all the way to create an exemplary combination of protection and fashion and a leading example of this is turtlenecks. From medieval knights in the Middle Ages to Steve Jobs in the 1990s, turtlenecks have had a true transformation from a protective garment to a fashion signature, moulding into any outfit with its long-necked and sleeved ease.

Turtleneck: Speeding up on the journey

The turtleneck was first conceived in the Middle Ages when knights suffered severe chafing due to wearing chainmail. Extremely uncomfortable the material also made movement in a battle more difficult and thus, a garment that would protect the neck and torso from the rough and heavy metal was created. However, it was in the 1600s that the ensemble bubbled up to the royalty, with flared ruffles worn by the likes of Queen Elizabeth I of England. From the court, turtlenecks reached the field in the 1800s when English polo players added them to their uniform as 'polo neck'.
While it slowly trickled down to the working class in the 1920s, English playwright Noel Coward is credited with coveting the garment for long years when it became a silent workwear. It was in the 1990s that turtlenecks were brought back in the game and market after being donned by Apple's Steve Jobs, who owned about 100 iterations of the garment designed by Japanese designer Issey Miyake.

These days, a turtleneck can be an outfit staple or hero piece depending on the way you style it. Below, we have five interesting ways you can rock this basic this fall.

3/7

Keep it short: A sweater dress

With a high neckline and long sleeves, turtlenecks are the best choice to highlight your figure. And in the game of fashion where trends call out your name every second, taking a little risk and pairing them with a short skirt can transform the fit into a DIY sweater dress moment. Complete with thigh-high boots, it can be the ideal choice for those looking to look taller and structured.

4/7

On the ramp: Capri it is

Models like Kendal Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber have really pushed the combination of capris and kitten heels this season. From outings with friends to birthday trips, the pair has been spotted many times on the streets and if you finally want to try it this winter, then why not pair them with a turtleneck and set it all with a jacket, blazer or sweater vest? P.S. Keep this idea for the not-so-chilly days.

5/7

Layer it up: Dress it down

Why should summer have all the fun? Turtlenecks have always been used to layer up outfits, and this fall, don't store away your summer dresses. Layer them with a turtleneck underneath and rock them in style. Add in a jacket and a pair of boots and strut your way, girl.

6/7

Peek-a-boo: Crop turtleneck

Fashion is fun and so should be your fit. Add a crop turtleneck to your winter closet and pair it with another crop top, low-rise jeans, baggy jeans or a long skirt. The world is your oyster!

7/7

House the trousers: Tuck them in

For those who are rushing off to the desk early morning, trousers are a required staple, but add a glitter to your fit by tucking a turtleneck in them. Experiment with monochromatic looks, prints, waist-length jewellery or a statement bag to create something truly unique and yours. This winter, play the fashion game and curate your stylish outfits with staples like turtlenecks which are the true silent heroes!
