Testing the purity of gemstones

When you purchase jewellery or a gemstone, you always go through the process of evaluating its purity and to know whether it is genuine or not. Whether the gemstone is man-made or natural, there are methods to know whether it provides justice to the value you are giving for it. From a layman’s eyes, you cannot confidently state the purity of the gemstone, but there are methods by which you can identify the purity of a gemstone. Let’s take a look at some of the interesting methods.

2/6

Colour and light analysis

Receiving colourful pendants come with a question of the worth of the pendant stone. One can do a simple test at home to see the authenticity of the mineral for which you will simply require a magnifying glass which can be used to check what colour the stone is and how the effect of sunlight matters or if artificial light passes through it. A rare natural stone will split the light when passed through, whereas artificial stones will only showcase light rays passing through them easily.

3/6

Gemstone certificate

If you approach a gemologist for mineral identification, he/she will thoroughly examine the stone using professional equipment and will also give you their expert opinion with valuable insurance. After the detailed examination, always ask for a gemstone certificate proving that your gemstone is real and pure. In this manner, you will get a reliable appraisal with safe advice.

4/6

The heating test

This is one of the easiest ways to know whether your gemstone is real or not. You simply need to place the stone in sunlight or white water, or else you can blow warm air from a hair dryer at the stone. This heat will cause the fake material to warm up, whereas a real gemstone will never change its temperature and will remain constant.

5/6

The hardness test

Every gemstone is certainly hard and also has a Mohs scale. The hardness of the gemstone also helps to prove whether your stone is natural or fake. If you wish to have an accurate analysis then use a refractometer to accurately know the weight and hardness value of the stone which will tell you whether it is real or man-made.

Difference between artificial and natural stone

A natural stone mainly comes from the bottom of the earth and is rare because of its mineralogical properties and requirements. On the other hand, an artificial stone is a man-made craft in a factory or laboratory that can be produced as many times as one wants but does not have the rare factor or authenticity.
