How fruits impact kidney damage

We all know that fruits are important for the human body. From Ayurveda to medical science, fruits are proven to be an integral part of a balanced diet. But, did you know there are fruits that can harm some organs too? As per experts, people dealing with chronic kidney disease (CKD) should be careful with certain fruits. Dr. John Valentine, a board certified MD recently posted a video on Instagram, where he talked about four fruits that are worst for kidney health. Scroll down to read the details.

2/8

Bananas

As per Dr. John Valentine, they are high in potassium and damaged kidneys can't remove excess potassium, which puts your heart at risk. It is mentioned that generally bananas are not bad for the kidney in healthy individuals, but can pose risks for those with chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to high potassium content.

3/8

Oranges

He also states that oranges are not good for kidneys. He mentions, "They seem healthy, but they're loaded with potassium too. Even one orange can spike potassium levels dangerously in kidney patients." Hence, those suffering from kidney issues should avoid them.

4/8

Avocados

Yes, they're a superfood, but not for weak kidneys, he adds in the video. "Avocados are packed with potassium and fat, making it harder for your kidneys to cope." Hence, those with kidney issues should avoid them. Also, it is said that people with latex allergy may react to avocado, experiencing itching, nausea, or swelling (latex-fruit syndrome), and hence they should avoid it.

5/8

Dried fruits

Dried fruits like raisins and apricots are also not good for kidneys. This one is especially dangerous, he confirms in the video. They're small, but super concentrated in potassium and sugar, both of which strain your kidneys even more. It contains a neurotoxin that healthy kidneys can filter, but for people with kidney failure, it can cause seizures.

6/8

Watermelon

It is proven to be rich in water content that helps you hydrate and flush out toxins that further helps with smooth functioning of the kidney with lycopene and potassium found in the fruit. As per a study, watermelon is known to have protective properties in kidney diseases and for having the ability to clear urine. The study has validated the traditional uses of watermelon and demonstrated that pulp extract possessed significant anti-urolithiatic and diuretic activities.

7/8

Berries

They are rich in antioxidants and are said to have anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent urinary tract infections, and boost the overall kidney health. As per a study, use of berries in daily diet help with boosting kidney health, through their high anthocyanin, polyphenol, and antioxidant content, which reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis while improving renal function in models of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

8/8

Pineapple

This fruit is rich in a compound called bromelain, which can help reduce inflammation and support kidney health. As per a study, pineapple is said to support the kidney through its bromelain enzyme, vitamin C, and high water content, which provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and diuretic effects that may aid digestion, reduce swelling, and promote hydration in early-stage kidney issues.
