How to grow herbs at home

A generous garnish of coriander leaves on dal, the addition of mint leaves in green chutney, usage of tulsi leaves while brewing tea; all this is enough to entice your appetite. Green herbs are widely used in our kitchen and that too in a variety of ways. Herbs not only add more colour to the plate but also adds a hint of freshness to the dish. Green Herbs are also loaded with benefits and must be a part of your daily diet. They are super easy to grow and can be grown in any type of kitchen garden. Coriander

Coriander leaf is the most popular garnish that is added to every other dal, sabzi, curry and even raita. Here is how you can grow coriander leaves at home.

  • To grow coriander, firstly take a pot that has enough drainage holes. Choose a small or medium-sized pot. The pot should be at least 6-7 inches deep.
  • Now fill the pot with soil. You can choose pre-mixed soil that is available at any type of plant nursery. After filling the soil, level it properly.
  • Take the coriander seeds and sow them in the soil. The seeds should be about ¼ inch deep and 1 inch apart.
  • Now cover the seeds gently with soil and sprinkle water on them.
  • Keep the plant outside in your kitchen garden or even a windowsill. Just ensure that it gets 6 hours of sunlight, as coriander plants do require a good amount of sunlight to grow.
  • Water the plant on alternate days. Make sure that the soil remains moist all the time but don’t overwater the plant.
  • Once the plant grows and reaches a height of about 7-8 inches. You can cut the coriander leaves along with the stems.

Mint

Mint leaves have a strong and fresh aroma, which refreshes you from within. Mint leaves are widely used to make Green Chutney, which is a popular Indian condiment served with snacks and finger foods. Here is how to grow Mint plant at home.

  • Mint leaves can be grown in rectangular pots as they don’t grow much in height.
  • Take a pot that is large enough to accommodate the mint plant and also has drainage holes.
  • Fill the pot with soil and sow mint seeds in it. The seeds should be just ¼ inch deep. They can easily be sown alongside each other.
  • Ideally, the mint plant should be kept outside in sunlight as it needs a minimum of 4-5 hours of sunlight daily
  • Water the mint plant just enough to keep it moist.
  • Once the mint leaves grow, you can pluck them out as per need.

Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Tulsi is a very popular herb in India and you can easily find a Tulsi plant it in every other home. It is not only used for culinary purposes but also for religious purposes. Tulsi Puja is done on special occasions and festivals.

  • To grow Tulsi plant, take a pot that is at least 12-14 inches deep.
  • Fill the pot with organic compost and level it properly
  • Now sow the seeds at ¼ inch deep. You can directly sow plant cuttings as well.
  • Once done, keep the Tulsi plant under direct sunlight. It should receive sunlight throughout the day.
  • Water the plant every day or when the soil seems dry. Make sure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
  • Once the seeds grow into a plant and the leaves sprout out, you can cut them gently with scissors as per need.

Curry Leaves

Curry Leaves are an intrinsic part of South Indian cuisine. They are added to tadka for Sambhar, Coconut Chutney and many other South Indian dishes. Here is how you can grow Curry Leaf plant at home and use it anytime you want.


  • You can grow a curry leaf plant either in a pot or directly in soil as well, if you have a big kitchen garden.
  • To sow in a pot, choose a deep pot and fill it with soil. Make sure the pot has enough drainage holes. If planting directly in the soil, make sure the soil is tilled.
  • Since curry leaves are quite difficult to germinate, it is better to use a curry leaf cutting to grow a plant.
  • Use a 6-8 inch long stem cutting and sow it directly in the soil
  • Keep the pot under direct sunlight and water it just enough to keep the soil moist.
  • You can use a water-soluble fertilizer to facilitate the growth of the plant.
  • Once the plant grows tall enough and starts bearing stems with curry leaves, it is ready to be used.
  • You can remove 1-2 stems from the plant whenever you need curry leaves for cooking.
