What happens when you drink Turmeric Ginger tea

Long hailed for its medicinal, therapeutic, and culinary benefits, ginger is a true wonder spice with many therapeutic properties. And when it is mixed with another Ayurveda-approved spice called turmeric, they together become a superfood combo, which can be added to a daily diet for long-term benefits. Sadhguru has also shared a simple and easy way of adding these two spices to a daily diet. In his Isha Foundation's blog post, he once shared a recipe for turmeric ginger tea that is loaded with benefits. Scroll down to read the details.

What Sadhguru says?

According to his Isha Foundation's post, ginger is closely related to turmeric, cardamom and galangal. Similar to other plants, ginger is a very complex mixture of compounds, containing several hundred known constituents, including beta-carotene, capsaicin, caffeic acid and curcumin. The pungency in ginger is derived from the principal compounds gingerol, shogaol and zingerone. Gingerol is the active component in fresh ginger, and is related to capsaicin, which is the active component in chilli peppers. Zingerone – the least pungent compound – occurs when gingerol is cooked, while shogaol – which is twice as pungent – occurs when gingerol is dried. he has also mentioned in the blog that ginger's potent anti-inflammatory compound called gingerol is the substance responsible for alleviating joint and muscle pain. According to a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, ginger affects certain inflammatory processes at a cellular level. It shares pharmacological properties with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, making it an effective treatment for both acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, the blog informs. He also states that eating slices of ginger sprinkled with salt before meals can increase saliva flow to aid digestion and prevent stomach issues. It is also helpful to drink ginger tea after a large meal to reduce bloating and flatulence.

Turmeric Ginger tea Recipe

Ingredients

5 cups of water
The yellow peel of 1 lemon - use a veggie peeler
2 inch piece of ginger cut in thin rounds, skin on
2 inch piece of turmeric root cut in thin rounds or grated, skin on
1 crack of black pepper
Juice of 1 lemon
1 teaspoon virgin coconut oil, butter, or avocado oil
1 tsp honey, preferably raw
Method: Bring the water, lemon peel, ginger, turmeric, and black pepper to a bare simmer, turn the heat down to low, cook for 7 minutes. Remove from heat, squeeze in the lemon juice and stir in the coconut oil. Strain the tea into a cup and add 1 teaspoon of honey. If using raw honey, wait for the tea to cool down a few minutes so the heat doesn't destroy some of its nutrients. And Enjoy!

Boosts immunity

It is said that they both contain compounds like curcumin and gingerol, which are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and help strengthen the immune system and fight off infections naturally. According to a study titled, The Impact of Curcumin on Immune Response: An Immunomodulatory Strategy to Treat Sepsis, curcumin exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and key inflammatory pathways like NF-kB, which reduces inflammation and may help prevent immune-related diseases.

Eases inflammation and pain

As per experts, both turmeric and ginger are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, which can help relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and even menstrual discomfort. The study titled Effect of Ginger on Inflammatory Diseases states that ginger possesses multiple biological activities, especially antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities that help reduce some of the main symptoms of some inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

6/7

Aids digestion

It is found that ginger promotes healthy digestion and turmeric supports liver function, and together, they help reduce bloating, improve gut health, and enhance nutrient absorption. According to a study titled Preventive and therapeutic effects of ginger on bowel disease: A review of clinical trials, it is found that in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), ginger is renowned for its ability to support digestive function by stimulating digestive juices, promoting gastric motility, and relieving gastrointestinal discomfort. It also mentions that a daily dose of 2000 mg of ginger is beneficial for reducing inflammation, dyspepsia, colorectal cancer and ulceration in the digestive tract of patients with IBS and IBD.

Calms the mind and body

It is said that a warm cup of this tea can reduce stress and promote relaxation, thanks to its soothing aroma and natural compounds that help balance mood. Regularly sipping it may also improve sleep quality, calm the nervous system, and support overall emotional well-being. Whether enjoyed before bedtime or during a mid-day pause, it offers a gentle way to unwind, center the mind, and restore inner balance without dependence on stimulants or artificial additives, making it a comforting ritual for both body and mind.
