Fasting for the Goddess

Celebrated throughout the country with immense joy and enthusiasm, Navratri is a festival that seeks to worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Celebrated over a span of nine days those who celebrate the festival leave no stone unturned to express their devotion towards Goddess Durga. Studies have shown that fasting for a few days detoxifies body and cleanses it from all impurities. Kuttu or Buckwheat

Kuttu ka Atta is often used to make vrat puris and vegetables. Kuttu is rich in protein, fibre and magnesium. Since it has a good portion of fibre, a decent serving of kuttu can help you feel full for a long time and keep hunger at bay.

Amaranth

Amarnath is one of the few sources containing complete protein. The grain also helps in lowering risk of cancer and heart diseases. Gluten free, this grain has high calcium content as well and helps lower cholesterol levels.

Quinoa

You can make quinoa khichdi, quinoa salad and quinoa porridge for Navratri. Tasty as well as healthy this seed can be had in various forms over the nine days of the festivities. Rich in fibre and protein quinoa seeds are helpful to fill your appetite without compromising on taste.

Less is known about this grain. It is filled with abundant in fibres which prevents the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases as well as helps in digestion. Samai also provides iron and prevents one from feeling hungry.

Also known as wheat chestnut, there are various dishes that are made from singhara. You can use singhara flour to make parathas, samosas, pooris and even cheelas. This rich in fibre and protein grain helps in water retention as well.
