5 foods to rescue over salted dishes

It happens to all of us—you’re cooking, enjoying the flow, and then a little extra salt slips into the pot. Suddenly, the dal, sabzi, or soup turns too salty. It’s annoying, especially when everything else was going so well. But don’t worry, there’s no need to throw it away. With a few easy tricks and common kitchen ingredients, you can bring it back on track. Scroll down to see how.

2/6

Potato

A raw potato is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Drop a peeled chunk into your over-salted curry or soup and let it simmer for a while. It pulls in some of the extra salt, helping the dish taste more balanced. Just don’t forget to take the potato out before serving. Also, potatoes are rich in potassium and fiber, so this trick is both useful and healthy.
3/6

A splash of cream or milk

If you’re dealing with a salty sauce or gravy, a bit of dairy can help tone it down. A splash of milk, cream, or even plain yogurt can ease the strong salty taste and make the dish feel smoother. Bonus: it also adds calcium and protein to your meal while improving the flavor.

4/6

Kneaded dough trick

This one’s perfect for dals or soups. Take a small ball of whole wheat dough and drop it into the dish while it’s simmering. Let it sit for a few minutes, then remove. The dough pulls in some of the salt and gently balances the taste without changing the texture of your dish. Plus, whole wheat dough brings in some B vitamins and minerals while doing its job.
5/6

Add acidity

If your gravy or sauce turns out too salty, just add a little milk, cream, or plain dahi. It helps tone down the salt and makes everything taste a bit smoother. Plus, it sneaks in some calcium and protein while fixing the mess. Easy and helpful.
6/6

Double the recipe

If you’ve got a bit of extra time (and ingredients), doubling your dish is the most foolproof fix. Just make more of the same thing—without adding more salt. It spreads out the saltiness and gives you extra leftovers.
