Fighting the common cold

A common cold, as the name suggests, is fairly common, and it can be rather annoying. Luckily for us, one of the easiest ways to prevent or at least reduce the symptoms of this pesky infection is by supplementing our body with vitamin C. Vitamin C contains a high concentration of immune cells, which help in depleting infections by strengthening the immune system. It helps in boosting the immune system so much, that a deficiency of vitamin C increases the risk of contracting infections. Because of this, it is important to get enough vitamin C during infections such as a common cold. With that being said, here are some of the most effective vitamin C foods that you should have to fight a common cold.

2/8

Tomato

Not only are tomatoes a commonly used ingredient in most households, but they are also available all year round. Loaded with vitamin C, it is a versatile fruit that can be added to pastas, salads, sauces, or any other veggie, so you can easily boost your immunity while enjoying a delicious meal.

3/8

Spinach

The high immunity boosting vitamin C content in spinach is enough to keep a cold at bay, but that is not where the benefits end. It is also rich in antioxidants and beta carotene, which increase the infection fighting ability of the immune system.

4/8

Kiwi

Kiwis are loaded with many essential nutrients, among which rests a high concentration of vitamin C. While vitamin C boosts blood cells to increase immunity and fight off the common cold, the high dosage of other vitamins and minerals keeps rest of the body functioning properly.

5/8

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits contain the heaviest concentration of vitamin C, so fruits like orange, grapefruit, and lemon pack a hefty dose of the anti-cold vitamin C, with one regular sized orange containing 60 milligrams of vitamin C. How’s that for high concentration?

6/8

Broccoli

Not only is broccoli one of the best sources of vitamin C, it is also loaded with antioxidants which prevent damage to immune cells, and fiber which produces by-products that boost the immune system.

7/8

Bell peppers

Gram for gram, bell peppers contain twice the amount of vitamin C than citrus fruits, which are some of the most potent vitamin C foods. Therefore they are more effective in combating common cold symptoms than most other foods.

8/8

Conclusion

Even though vitamin C contains immunity boosting properties that are known to help prevent and reduce the symptoms of a common cold, it is advisable to consume it in moderation. Having too much vitamin C can lead to adverse effects like digestive problems, kidney stones, and thanks to its iron absorbing capability, it may lead to an iron overdose. Remember to always consult a doctor before making such dietary changes.
